Shamshan Vairagya or Daily Sadhana?

Shamshan Vairagya or Daily Sadhana: Make a Right Choice at the Right Time and that Time is Now!

Shree Swami Mukundananda ji narrated a very interesting story in one of his discourses. Once, a man in a village saw four people carrying a dead body on their shoulders  to the cremation ground. Many people followed them and everyone was chanting, "Ram naam satya hai, Hari ka naam satya hai" (The name of Rama is the truth, the name of Hari is the truth). The man watching them silently was surprised and thought why are they saying "Ram naam satya hai, Hari ka naam satya hai" to a dead man who is not going to hear them. He approached the villagers and said, "Why are you saying, Ram naam satya hai, Hari ka naam satya hai? ". The people thought he is crazy but explained that it means that God is the only truth.  The man then asked, "Why is it needed for the man who is already dead?" An elderly fellow answered that it is not for the man who is dead but for all of us who followed him till cremation ground to remind ourselves that death is inevitable and God is the ultimate truth.

The man pondered that over and thought that it would be a great service if I start reminding people every day of this truth of life. From that very day, whenever he met people, he would greet them, "Ram naam satya hai, Hari ka naam satya hai". The villagers thought he had gone crazy and started avoiding him. All the villagers who accompanied the dead man to the cremation ground had forgotten the truth that they had realized only for some time at the cremation ground. They felt temporary or passing mood of detachment from their body and the world, thus called Shamshan Vairagya. As soon as they entered the real world, everything seemed surreal. This is the most spurious form of spirituality.

Daily Sadhana keeps us grounded to the reality that God is the ultimate truth. But, don't wait too late to realize this truth. When we keep Him in our daily thoughts and make Him the centre of all our actions, we slowly get to an equilibrium state of mind.

And, this is the ultimate goal of our life!
